Copy Chair

Copy Chair
A client brought this chair to us to produce a replica and in this instance as it was going to be re-upholstered we were able to remove parts of the upholstery to make pattern making and measuring easier. We aren't always so lucky and if the customer wishes to retain the original upholstery we are able to draw on decades of skill and experience to craft a replica item

Finished Copy
The client was delighted with the finished chair.

Prototype Design & Development
We have been asked by clients to assist in developing new or variations of existing models of chairs. This usually involves a lot of manual work shaping and perfecting angles, thicknesses of rails and overall dimensions. We work closely with our clients to achieve the exact desired outcome

Here you see Michael working with the back rail of a chair. Having already made a pattern for the shape of the rail, he lays it on a piece of shaped, solid beech to mark up ready to be cut out. This will then need to be shaped by hand to achieve the curvature that the client requires. This means quite a bit of involvement with the client as often they don't know what they require until they see it!

This is the back legs of the chair jointed together with the seat frame. All angles and curves have to be exact for these to come together perfectly. This is now ready for the shaped top rail to be fitted to place and jointed together

Here you see a proportioned drawing showing a foot pattern Some chairs will be fitted with castors, others will be all wood
Here we will guide you through some of the different stages of making a set of dining chairs, showing machining, carving and fretwork.
We were given one side and one arm chair to use as copy chairs.
